In 1972, a 27-year old Peter Brock took to Mount Panorama in his Holden Torana. It would be Brock's first of nine Bathurst 1000 wins between 1972 and 1987, making him the "King of the Mountain".

THE Holden Torana that Peter Brock raced in his comeback to the Holden Dealer Team is up for sale. Brock rejoined the factory Holden squad in 1978, ending a three-year stint as a privateer. Brock made his Bathurst debut in 1969 in the Holden Dealer Team Monaro GTS 350, but it was in the smaller Holden Torana.

The same Torana was used by Brock in the 1973 ATCC, earning his first ATCC race win en route to finishing runner-up to Moffat in the championship, before being sold by the HDT the following year. It passed through the hands of a number of owners, including Dick Johnson, and was still being raced when it was bought by current custodian Glen Amos.

Peter Brock's devastatingly-quick HDT L34 should have given the Bathurst King his greatest ever Mountain win. It failed, but a reunion a few years back proved Brock still had fond memories of his mighty Torana. Of all Peter Brock's nine Bathurst 500/1000 wins, one stands out as the most majestic.

So while it debuted as a winner in '77, the 1978 A9X was the first John Sheppard-built HDT car and began a purple patch for Brock, and Holden, that continued until 1985. MORE Legend Series.
