Koh Wai is a small crescent-shaped island, approximately 45 minutes south of from Koh Chang by slow boat or 20 minutes by speedboat. This laid back, island paradise is a throwback to another time. There aren't any villages, roads, shops or vehicles of any kind. No ATMs, pharmacies, tailors shops or even a police station. Not even a 7-eleven.

Koh Wai is a paradise island with a coral reef and small sandy beaches. It is part of the Koh Chang marine national park. Snorkeling and diving is excellent, as relaxing or swimming in the bay is. It is good for relaxing a few days and as a stopover from Koh Chang to other islands.

Koh Wai Paradise is the largest and most popular of the island's cheap bungalow spots and while some aspects of it are great, we were put off by the many signs declaring: "No entry!! Private zone." With all guests using shared bathrooms, this is as close as you'll come to camping without staying in a tent. Travelfish says:

Ko Wai, this small paradise is situated approximately 6 kilometres south of the southernmost end of Ko Chang (for the exact location of Ko Wai click the logo top left!). The island is about 3 kilometres long, in the widest point 1.5 kilometres and has some very beautiful sand beaches.

Koh Wai is the smallest resort island south of Koh Chang. You can kayak around it in two hours. There are five low-key lodgings, the upscale Koh Wai Beach Resort on the south shore and four budget places on the north: Koh Wai Paradise, Goodfeeling, Pakarang and Grandma's Huts. They are isolated from each other, but joined by a trail.

The pier used by Paradise Resort and Good Feeling Bungalows, at the top end of the island is the main entry point onto Koh Wai. Situated about 30 minutes speedboat ride from Laem Ngop Pier on the mainland, Koh Wai is a tiny island of 2 to 3 kilometres long by the same again wide. Despite having no villages, shops, local houses, roads, vehicles or mains electricity, there are four places to stay, a mixture of backpacker style thatch huts and simple resort-style bungalows.

Stepping Into Paradise Fast-forward a couple of days and there I was, hopping on a boat and into the unknown. I wasn't even sure I'd find a place to stay on the island, but I'd take my chances and - if worse came to worst - I could still go back to Koh Chang after having enjoyed the island for a full day.

Run by a family from Chanthaburi, the old-style bungalow joint has no sign but you can't miss it just east of the entrance to Koh Wai Paradise. Fronting the restaurant is a rocky shore with some tables and lounge chairs placed on a dilapidated deck set near a wooden house rimmed by fishing nets and buoys, which some visitors will find unkempt.
